At the Philadelphia Obituary Project, we treat homicide victims as individuals rather than statistics. But we are in crisis. The number of people murdered continues to rise, even during the pandemic. And so we will begin sharing this data along with the names of each person in one post.
As of June 9, there have been 177 people murdered in the City of Philadelphia. This is a 26% increase compared to this date last year, when 139 people were killed by June 9.

It’s also the highest since before 2007, when the police department began publicly releasing the numbers.
Not only is Philadelphia contending with a global pandemic and civil unrest over racist policing, we’re losing more members of our community than in decades to senseless violence. More mothers are crying. More children have been left parentless.
