At the Philadelphia Obituary Project, we treat homicide victims as individuals rather than statistics. But we are in crisis. The number of people murdered continues to rise, even during the pandemic. And so we will begin sharing this data along with the names of each person in one post.
As of July 7, there have been 214 people murdered in the City of Philadelphia. This is a 29% increase compared to this date last year, when 165 people were killed by July 7.

So far, 2020 is outpacing 2007 as the deadliest year on record in Philadelphia.
During May, there were 33 homicides, meaning we had a 33% increase over the last month.
Not only is Philadelphia contending with a global pandemic and protests over racist policing, we’re losing more members of our community than in decades to senseless violence. More mothers are crying. More children have been left parentless.
