At the Philadelphia Obituary Project, we treat homicide victims as individuals rather than statistics. But we are in crisis. The number of people murdered continues to rise, even during the pandemic. And so every month, we will share this data along with the names of each person in one post.
Philadelphia’s gun-violence epidemic is at its highest level in more than a decade. As of Oct. 7, there have been 366 people murdered in the City of Philadelphia. This is a 40% increase compared to this date last year, when 261 people were killed by this date.
The current total is more homicides than 2019 had for the entire year, when a total of 356 people were killed. And there are still more than two months left in 2020.
Not only is Philadelphia contending with a global pandemic, we’re losing more and more members of our community to senseless violence. More mothers are crying. More children have been left parentless.
Here are the names of all the people killed in September, plus when and where. But we know they are not just names. Please contact us at [email protected] if you are a family member of any of these victims so we can properly memorialize them.
