Charles Matthews was a devoted father to his twin sons and his daughter, whom he loved deeply. They were his reason for living and the light in his life. Even while battling personal challenges, including drug addiction and paranoid schizophrenia, Chuck continued to seek a better path and a more stable life.
Born on October 21, 1986, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Chuck, who was also sometimes called Charlie, was raised in North Philadelphia. He spent much of his life in the Richard Allen Homes community. Though his early years were marked by challenges, Chuck’s story was one of persistence.
“Chuck had a deep desire to be better for those he loved,” Kiara Johnson, his girlfriend of four years, shared. “I loved how he enjoyed spending time with our daughter.”
At the age of 17, “Charlie” faced circumstances that led to his incarceration, where he served a 10-year sentence. Despite limited formal education and the hardships he endured, he carried a strong resolve to grow and to be present for his family, especially his children.
“He wanted to be a good dad, Kiara said, “I stuck by him because I believed in him. He was trying to turn his life around, but it was hard in these streets.”
On July 14, 2025, during an altercation in the 1800 block of East Cambria Street in Kensington shots were fired and Charles lost his life. He was 38.
Charles is survived by his loving mother, his brothers and sisters, his girlfriend and his three children, who will carry his memory forward.
Chuck will be remembered for his resilience, his love for his family and the effort he made to overcome life’s obstacles. His life reminds us of the importance of compassion, understanding and the strength it takes to keep trying, even in the face of adversity.
