William James,Sr., a proud South Philadelphia native, lived a life defined by love for his family, unwavering devotion to his son, and a determination to become the best version of himself. He was affectionately known as “Bonnie”—a nickname whose origin remained a mystery even to those who loved him most.
William was born on December 15, 1982, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended St. Charles School and Audenried High School. Although he did not complete high school through the traditional route, he later earned his GED, demonstrating his commitment to personal growth and perseverance.
An only child, William understood the importance of family. Above all else, he was a devoted father to his beloved son, William, Jr., whom he affectionately called “Sonny Boy.” His son was the center of his world. Fatherhood was the role he cherished most, and he was determined not to be an absentee father as his own father had been.

He also shared a loving relationship with his fiancée, Jontae Quann, and remained deeply devoted to his grandmother. His happiest moments were spent creating memories with the people he loved most.
William worked for AFW in King of Prussia and also faithfully assisted his grandmother with whatever she needed.
“He was known as one of the good guys,” Jontae shared, “kind-hearted, dependable. He was always ready with a joke to make family and friends laugh.”
An early riser by nature, William enjoyed beginning each day with breakfast and a cup of coffee before taking his son to school, embracing the simple routines that made fatherhood so meaningful to him.
Like many, William’s life was not without challenges. In his 20s, a wrong-place, wrong-time situation resulted in time spent in prison. Rather than allowing that chapter to define him, he used it as an opportunity to reflect, grow and change the course of his life.
By the time he became a father at the age of 30, he had altered his mindset.
“Bonnie was determined to be a positive role model and provide a better future for his son,” Jontae said. “He wanted to make sure his son grew up making smart choices.”

Tragically, just as his life was moving in the right direction, William became the victim of a senseless act of violence. During the COVID-19 pandemic, on the afternoon of February 12, 2021, at a gas station located at 33rd and York Streets in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia, William was fatally robbed and shot after being ambushed by individuals he considered friends.
To this day, no arrests have been made.
Though his life was cut far too short, William will be remembered not for the mistakes he made, but for the man he became—a loving father, devoted family man, loyal partner, and someone who never stopped striving to build a better life for those he loved.
Islamic funeral services were held on February 17, 2021, at Pelzer Funeral Home on 19th and Federal Streets in Philadelphia.
William leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved son, William Jr. (“Sonny Boy”), his devoted fiancée Jontae, his loving grandmother, and a host of extended family members and friends whose lives were forever touched by his kindness, humor, and love.
